Screens that feature integrated media player devices have become the most popular solutions for large digital signage deployments. These “System-on-Chip” screens are easy to install and are on average 30% less expensive than external media player devices. Samsung is the leader in the SoC segment with its Samsung SoC digital signage smart TVs. Navori Labs offers a version of it’s popular QL Player software for the Samsung smart signage platform.

There are however some disadvantages to SoC screens, such as the integrated media player’s limited computing power. This results in a 50% reduction in overall performance compared to external media player devices.

It’s why many SoC screens have difficulty in resolving complex HTML5 content. Also, when an SoC screen fails, you need to send out the entire unit for repairs. This requires uninstalling, packaging, and shipping the defective screen for service which increases maintenance costs.

External media player devices tend to be much more powerful, offer more features, and deliver a better viewing experience than SoC screens. Note that QL Player running on a Navori Stix 3700 or a Windows 10 PC will outperform any SoC screen.

There is less downtime since defective media player devices can be swapped out on-site so you can quickly resume operation. Shipping costs are also lower and servicing is easier since you don’t have to remove and ship out the entire screen. This is another major advantage over SoC screens.

Corporate IT departments are more comfortable using Windows 10 PCs since they are widely used for business tasks. Also, PCs offer significant advantages over SoC screens. They are easy to integrate into corporate networks and are easily upgradeable.

Add a multi-screen video card to any PC running QL Player to drive content across up to 16 Full HD screens. You can display perfectly synchronized content on any screen or play content that spans the entire surface without limits. Navori Labs recommends its 64-Bit QL Player IPR for professional multi-screen installations.

Windows PCs consume ten times the energy of a Navori Stix 3700 so you should also factor this in your purchase decision.

The media player software included with Samsung Tizen, LG WebOS and Brightsign media player devices are web players. They are non-native software applications so they must resort to various tricks to deliver acceptable content rendering.

These devices have limited computing power. They often use an outdated Chromium web browser version compared to what’s available on the Android platform. This precludes the use of external apps such as those that perform device monitoring services for reliable performance. These media players are entry-level solutions meant for basic uses such as looping videos or displaying simple templates.

Samsung SSP and LGWebOS SoC displays rely on operating systems originally designed for consumer use. Meanwhile, Brightsign’s OS is aimed at audiovisual users that require better reliability and a global reseller network for easy servicing.

Android and Windows are well known operating systems used by professionals worldwide. Navori Labs’ QL software for these platforms is native, meaning you get better rendering quality that matches a broadcast TV experience.

We recommend Android single screen applications and Windows digital signage software for multi-screen/single player installations. It’s also important to note that Android is compatible with the highest security standards. It’s why it’s such a great choice for corporate digital signage.

Navori Labs created its Samsung SoC digital signage and LG media player software to provide a more reliable and efficient solution for these platforms. Our signage software for Windows is another example of a professional-grade solution for PC hardware.

QL is available for all these hardware platforms and operating systems, ensuring total interoperability. This way you can create content once and publish to any platform without worry.

Simply choose the platform that meets your needs and you’re ready to go!
